The wound is the place

where the light

enters you.

Welcome

Welcome

We can all use support in difficult times. I'm glad you're here!  Therapy can be helpful in so many ways, especially because ongoing difficulties and internal struggles can have a profound impact on our lives over time. Whether symptoms manifest as depression, anxiety, addictions, anger or difficulties in relationships or life path, there is often a deeper, unresolved pain wanting discovery and transformation. In the words of poet David Whyte, "Our wounds and traumas are not just a difficult inheritance, nor are they meant to be completely 'healed' or forgotten...but the actual doorway through which we may fully appear in the world again."

We all deserve to be seen and respected.  Whatever is bringing you here is the right place to start.  My style is warm, engaging and nonjudgmental.  I create a safe space to help you express and experience yourself in new helpful ways and for us to collaborate on your behalf.  I know it can be hard to take a first step.

I encourage you to reach out.

About Susan
1-1_edited_edited_edited_edited_edited_e

I am passionate about supporting people in times of need and helping them to find more clarity, self-understanding and agency in their lives.  I also feel quite grateful for the opportunity to do this meaningful work and be a part of the lives of my clients for whom

I have deep care and respect.

I bring over twenty years of experience in mental health and education, which prior to private practice, included crisis and suicide intervention, counseling children and teens with trauma, family crisis and dysfunction, social and learning issues and ADHD.  Working with the emotional, cognitive, and developmental issues of children and their families has been invaluable to my therapeutic work with adults, as these earlier experiences can underlie so many adult struggles. As the youngest in a large family with generational histories of anxiety, depression and alcoholism, my experience has informed my foundational understanding of early attachment, coping and identity development within the family system, and how these influences can form our sense of self and safety within relationships and the world around us.

I am trained in Somatic Experiencing (ongoing), a body-oriented approach to healing trauma and other stress-related disorders, EMDR/Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing for trauma, DBT/Dialectical Behavior Therapy for alcohol and substance abuse, ACT/Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness, and CBT/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I hold a Masters Degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy and CBT/Cognitive Behavioral Therapy from the University of San Francisco.  Some alternative pursuits to healing have included a Shaman journey in Peru, guided medicine journeys, equine leadership sessions, and Vipassana meditation. I enjoy hiking and exploring the outdoors of the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area.

Testimonials

"Susan is a wonderful therapist and my life has improved dramatically since I've started seeing her.  Susan's warm, open, and nonjudgmental demeanor made me feel at ease immediately. I started therapy to work through general anxiety, low self-esteem, and to stop self-harming. She zeroed in on the most pressing issues and helped me design a practical, simple, and helpful self-care plan.  Within a short amount of time, Susan helped me become more self-aware and confident, and prompted me to dig deeper into my triggers.  I credit her for my swift transformation over the past year to become more self-actualized, and self-compassionate..  Simply put, I am happier and feel better."
